If you want to live in a county where you are never far from a stunning public garden, you will be very happy in Berkshire, Hampshire or Surrey. These counties are known for their natural wonders, as I’ve blogged about before, but if you are specifically looking for gardens, here are some of the very best.

Highclere Castle

Famous for being the place where Downton Abbey is filmed, Highclere Castle in Berkshire also used to be the home of Lord Carnarvon, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun (you can see an Egyptian Exhibition during your visit).

It also boasts a spectacular garden where you will find many species of plants, some of which were brought back from Lord Carnarvon’s travels. There’s a lovely secret garden, and the wildflower garden is stunning. There is also a café and restaurant.

Waltham Place Garden

Waltham Place Garden in Maidenhead is one of the most beautiful gardens in Berkshire. It’s a true hidden gem, boasting ornamental gardens, kitchen gardens, a lake and more. Take a guided walk and visit the Tea Room. It usually opens in May and stays open all summer.

Mottisfont Abbey Gardens

Located in Test Valley in Hampshire, Mottisfont Abbey Gardens is best known for its stunning Rose Gardens. Contained inside a walled garden, these rose gardens boast incredible colours, and you should visit in June if you want to see them at their best. You will also find herbaceous gardens, and you can go on a guided walk during your visit. It is open most of the year, and you should make the time to see the fascinating abbey while you are here.

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum

This is another Hampshire garden that is beautiful at any time of year, but it is especially attractive in spring when the colours are incredible. Walking along Spring Walk and admiring the flowers in bloom is a highlight. But it’s also worth a visit in January to see the Winter Garden. At 180 acres in size, the gardens are easily worth spending a day exploring.

RHS Gardens at Wisley

If there is one must-see garden in Surrey, it’s this one. The innovative garden boasts greenhouses complete with tropical plants, and a wide range of garden styles including rock gardens, heather gardens and more. There’s also a beautiful lake and woodland walks, and it’s open all year round.

Loseley Park Garden

Located near to Guildford, this 2.5-acre walled garden is breathtaking. Boasting an award-winning rose garden, a large herb garden and a white garden complete with fountains, it is well worth taking the time to visit.

Enjoy the Beautiful Gardens of the Home Counties

These are just a very small selection of the most impressive gardens in Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey. There are many more, and I recommend that you browse through the Great British Gardens website to find some others that might interest you.

Stunning attractions like these gardens are just one of the reasons to choose the Home Counties for your next property. Feel free to ask me about any other attractions or highlights of the area. I specialise in the Home Counties and London so I’ll be more than happy to provide you with guidance.
